Folio (285 x 185 mm). Title page in red and black with woodcut of astronomers, numerous woodcut diagrams of scientific instruments in text, lacking 9 plates at end. Modern blind-tooled calf. Title page re-margined at bottom, margins trimmed with slight losses to edges of some woodcuts, scattered browning, some scuffing to covers.

Apianus taught mathematics at the University of Ingolstadt, wrote a number of scientific treatises on a range of topics, and designed a variety of astronomical instruments. His instrument designs and the method for using them are presented in this meticulously illustrated production from his own printing house. Small 4to (199 x 158 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved and woodcut illustrations in text. Contemporary brown suede, rebacked. Covers worn, browning and spotting, marginal tear to Bb4 and larger tear to Hh1 into text, ink ownership inscription (dated 1692) on free front endpaper.

Fourth edition, enlarged and corrected. Moxon was Hydrographer to Charles II, as well as a mapmaker, globe maker, and mathematical instrument maker. ESTC R11899; Wing M3025.

As Valerio Adami wrote in 1968, “The hand is a kind of seismograph giving body to the traces left by the circuit of imagination”: the drawing hand is an instrument that records what the eye looks at and the mind sees. It is the starting point of the artist’s method: the hand-seismograph that in the “journey of drawing” goes through the kaleidoscope of his inspiration, and that in the essentiality of the line reworks, summarizes, juxtaposes, disassembles and reassembles it. […]

The lines of the drawing, eternally moving as the mind distilling them, - since for Adami “nulla dies sine linea” (no day without a line) – are the “off the beaten track” trails that the artist constantly crosses and connects. He does so by bringing distant worlds together, from the Ganges to the Matterhorn and from Paris to Finland by making the Greek mythological narrative coexist with New York street life, by recalling the light spells of Lake Maggiore or the clouds at sunrise.

FIRST EDITION of this important treatise on the astrolabe, presenting Rojas\' model for a universal astrolabe with orthographic projection. \"The chief novelty in [the astrolabe] consisted in a special treatment of the face of the instrument as an orthographic projection of the sphere on the plane of the meridian\" (Gunther, Astrolabes of the World).
